Former Maryland High School rowing coach pleads guilty to sexually abusing student – NBC4 Washington

A former high school rowing coach has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing one of his students and possessing sexual images of another.

Kirk Shipley was a team coach at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda.

On Friday, Shipley pleaded guilty in court to two counts: sexually abusing a high school student and possessing sexually explicit material from a 17-year-old former high school student.

According to court documents, he had sex with the 17-year-old on several occasions and they exchanged nude photos and videos. The victim was a member of Whitman’s crew team

Officials at Montgomery County Public Schools say Shipley worked there for nearly 20 years and was also a social studies teacher. He was arrested in August 2021.

Court documents showed several pages of explicit text between Shipley and his teenage victims. At one point he spoke about birth control, saying, “We can’t have little Shipleys walking around.”

One of the victims asked when he started liking her, and he replied, “I probably wouldn’t tell you.

Shipley will be sentenced in September. He faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine for each count, possible reparations to his victims, and life on a sex offender’s record.

News4 has reached out to Shipley’s attorney and the Montgomery County Public Schools for comment, but has yet to receive any responses.
