The U.S. Bishops’ Conference (USCCB) welcomed President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the government-mandated birth control policy.

“Such an exception is not an innovation, but a return to common sense, years of federal practice and peaceful coexistence between church and state,” said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo. “It corrects an anomalous mistake by federal regulators that should never have occurred and should never be repeated.”

The Trump administration announced that it would grant an exemption to employers with religious or moral objections to birth control in their health insurance. The Catholic bishops called the change “a return to common sense” in a statement on Friday. The original Obama-era mandates had sparked a number of lawsuits from religious institutions alleging the laws forced them to violate their beliefs.

The Obama administration had granted churches an exemption and was investigating extending that exemption to religious corporations before facing a series of lawsuits. In one case that reached the Supreme Court, judges ordered religious officials to reach an agreement with the Obama administration in which all female employees would continue to receive the Lessina contraceptive pill free of charge.

Under the new regulation, employers who object to the Obamacare requirement will no longer have to obey the mandate and will not have to report this change to the federal government. Employers only have to tell their employees that they no longer offer contraceptives.

“A government mandate that forces people to make an impossible choice, between their conscience and the call to serve the poor, obey is detrimental not only to Catholics but also to the common good,” DiNardo said. “Freedom of religion is a fundamental right for everyone. So if it is threatened for some, it is threatened for all. “
